International speaker Dr. Zeiad Yossry, Professor of Neurosurgery and Parkinson's Disease, participated in the Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Surgery Academy Course, organized by Medtronic in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Medtronic Innovation Center (MIC), from July 24 to 25, 2024. Medtronic offers training and educational programs to help neurosurgeons learn more about deep brain stimulation therapy.
Deep brain stimulation surgery is one of the latest surgical techniques for treating movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease. It involves using a device that delivers electrical impulses to specific brain areas to manage these disorders. 47 participants from 11 different countries participated in the training course, which introduced the basics and then advanced clinical and technical skills with practical experience.
This course combined scientific theory with practical training on movement disorder cases. It guided participants to understand the basics of deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery from a neurosurgical perspective, as well as reviewing new features in DBS programming for movement disorders. It also provided comprehensive coverage of DBS surgery, including: patient selection, basic surgical techniques, basic programming: goals and side effects, key factors and variables affecting surgery, long-term patient care, and troubleshooting technical failures and medical side effects.
